Billionaire media mogul Rupert Murdoch gave a strange response when asked about plans for mainstream news websites to charge for content, declaring, “The current days of the internet will soon be over.”

He was making reference to the fact that corporate media websites cannot continue to survive under their current failing business model.

The establishment media is dying and advertising revenue has plummeted as people turn to blogs and the alternative media for their news in an environment of corporate lies and spin.

This has forced sectors of the corporate media to charge the dwindling number of loyal readers they have left for news content, a practice which is set to become widespread according to Murdoch. This will only send more people over to the alternative media as the old organs of de facto state-controlled propaganda wither and die.

“Asked whether he envisaged fees at his British papers such as the Times, the Sunday Times, the Sun and the News of the World, (Murdoch) replied: “We’re absolutely looking at that,” reports the Guardian. “Taking questions on a conference call with reporters and analysts, he said that moves could begin “within the next 12 months‚” adding: “The current days of the internet will soon be over.”

Murdoch’s newspapers and TV networks, which include Fox News and the Asian Star Network, have seen profits plummet from $216m to just $7m year-on-year. MySpace.com is also floundering despite a recent move to replace the company’s entire management staff.

It was all but over for the Boston Globe this week, following a threat to close the 137-year-old publication after net losses of $85 million this year alone. Only a last minute cost-cutting agreement on behalf of its owner, The New York Times Company, and The Boston Newspaper Guild, saved the newspaper.

But it’s not just establishment newspapers that are struggling to survive – social networking websites like Twitter and corporate online video giant You Tube are also deep in the red. Apparently, paying out millions in server fees for half the population of the planet to watch clips of cute puppies isn’t a sustainable business model.

This is why You Tube is being forced to pursue lucrative partnerships with giant production studios and broadcasters, at the expense of user generated content which has been relegated to a sub-section of its website, taking the “You” out of You Tube altogether. Content that may be deemed harmful to You Tube’s corporate agenda and its multi-million dollar partnership deals, like The Alex Jones Channel, is being systematically erased from You Tube’s website under the pretext of flimsy copyright infringement claims.

The jig is up for the corporate media. If they continue to allow free access to their content they will go out of business because there’s not enough advertising revenue coming in, whereas if they charge for content they will lose a huge chunk of their audience and their influence in shaping the news agenda will wane completely.

This is the price the corporate media has paid for lying, spinning and obfuscating on behalf of the virulently corrupt power elite and expecting the population to eat it up without question.

The corporate media monopoly has terminal cancer and they are losing their power, which is why they are aggressively supporting moves to phase out the old Internet altogether and replace it with “Internet 2,” a highly regulated and controlled electronic Berlin wall, where alternative voices will be silenced and giant corporate propaganda organs will dominate once again.

This what Murdoch is really getting at when he assures us that, “The Internet will soon be over” and it’s down to us to stop that agenda from being realized.

A Level 6 alert means that company officials will be asked by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to undertake a number of efforts to fight any pandemic — including the appointment of a workplace pandemic coordinator or team.

The coordinator would be responsible for monitoring employees to ensure they follow basic rules of hygiene, such as washing hands, and to make sure that breathing masks are available. And if a worker becomes sick, the pandemic monitor is supposed to ensure they go home, according to Jack Sotallaro, director of education at DRI International Inc. in Conway, Ark.

“Going to a Level 5 pretty [the current level] much says you’re able to pass the flu back and forth from people and that there’s every possibility you’ll go to a pandemic level,” said Sotallaro, whose organization educates and certifies companies for business continuity planning.

The real issue, however, may not be sick employees, but an inability to get supplies and deliveries, he said.

“If you’re in a city or a locality that gets to pandemic levels of infection — and it doesn’t have to be everywhere — you’re going to see issues like suppliers not being able to get deliveries to you because they’re sick. It’s going to be a regional issue, even if your organization is not directly affected by the flu,” Sotallaro said.

And if the flu does strike a corporation, plans will be needed that allow IT workers to manage computer systems from home, Sotallaro said. Otherwise, there isn’t much choice but to have them in the office.

“Obviously, if a company’s only plan is to relocate [IT staff] to another site, they would be in trouble,” Sotallaro said. “But I would think most businesses that have a business continuity management program in place should have the basics. …”

In the meantime, he said, companies need to ensure that employees observe basic hygiene rules and wash their hands often. They should also already have an influenza or pandemic officer chosen to monitor the health of employees to determine if someone on-site has been infected.

“They’re keeping an eye out for anyone sick and encouraging [them] to go home. Anyone who comes to work with a fever has pretty much infected anyone within six feet of them,” he said.

Kim Elliott, deputy director of the Trust for America’s Health, a Washington-based nonprofit public health advocacy group, said that if the H1N1 swine flu epidemic reaches the level of the 1918 Spanish influenza pandemic, companies could see 40% of their workforce stay home, either because they’re sick or caring for family members who are. That figure also includes workers who stay home to avoid getting sick, even if they feel OK.

“It’s too early to tell,” Elliott said. “We don’t know how bad this disease will play out. It could mutate and become something much more severe or take a hiatus with the warm weather and come back with a vengeance in the fall.”

Elliott recommends that companies prepare to have only essential employees in the workplace and to cross-train those workers so that if one employee becomes ill, another employee can take over his responsibilities. “If you’re sick, you’re not doing anyone any favors by coming to work,” she said.

The U.S. government has created a Web site that offers guidance to businesses in case of a pandemic.

In reaction to the severe acute respiratory syndrome of 2003, many large U.S. businesses stockpiled Tamiflu pills, which is given over five days and can reduce the severity of flu symptoms. The U.S. government has also stockpiled 50 million courses of Tamiflu, according to Elliott.

By contrast, the majority of small and midsize firms in the U.S. have done little to prepare for a pandemic, Elliot said. “I would say more than half of U.S. businesses don’t even afford employees paid sick days,” she said.

Michael Croy, director of business continuity solutions at Forsythe Solutions Group Inc., an IT consulting firm in Skokie, Ill., said two-thirds of U.S. companies would need days or even weeks to recover from a significant business interruption, like one that could be caused by a pandemic.

Disaster recovery and business continuity planning can be the difference between no disruption in operations and a company going out of business. According to Croy, 29% of U.S. businesses that suffer a major disaster fail within two to four months. Half of all U.S. companies have had to activate a disaster recovery plan at some point, and 60% of midsize and large companies have experienced from one to 24 hours of unplanned downtime, with an average cost per incident of $3 million.

A year ago, The Conference Board, a non-profit organization comprising 600 corporations in nearly 60 nations, released survey results showing that fewer than half of all corporations had pandemic plans in place, according to Nick Kelley, a research assistant at the University of Minnesota’s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy.

“This is what would likely happen once we are in a full blown pandemic,” Kelley said. “Schools may be asked to shut down for a few weeks. Places where people gather, such as stadiums may be asked to close, postpone or modify their events for a period of time.”

Companies should make sure employees are preparing at home for a pandemic that may shut down public transportation and close schools, much as the Mexican government did yesterday, he said.

“We’re seeing instances now where people can’t go to grocery stores in Mexico,” Kelley said. “It would be very wise to ensure employees have an emergency plan at home. It would not be imprudent to have more than two weeks of critical supplies — food, medications, water — at home.”

If a pandemic is declared by the WHO, whether or not a business should shut down will depend on local conditions and guidance from local public health agencies, Kelley said. “That likely will be based on the number of cases or suspected case in your office.”

Kelley said CDC guidance is changing rapidly, but noted that the current plan is to adhere to its Community Strategy for Pandemic Influenza Mitigation.

There are six stages of a pandemic that begin with the presence of influenza in animals and end with increased and sustained transmission in general population. WHO determines what alert level the world faces.

As of this morning, 11 countries have officially reported 257 cases of the H1N1 swine flu influenza infection, of which 109 are in the U.S., according to WHO. That U.S. figure includes one death. Mexico has reported 97 confirmed human cases of infection, including seven deaths.

Other countries that have reported confirmed cases include Austria (one), Canada (19), Germany (three), Israel (two), Netherlands (one), New Zealand (three), Spain (13), Switzerland (one) and the United Kingdom (eight).

The CDC has already sent an alert to corporate human resources divisions offering information on the swine influenza A virus infection. “The CDC is working very closely with officials in states where human cases of swine influenza A have been identified, as well as with health officials in Mexico, Canada and WHO. This includes deploying staff domestically and internationally to provide guidance and technical support,” the CDC said.

First and foremost, major stock market trends mirror the ups and downs of society’s overall mood state – or social mood, as Prechter termed it in the new science he called socionomics. A rising (bull) market indicates improving social mood, while a falling (bear) market signals that society’s overall mood is worsening.

Of course, social mood as the driving force behind stocks, economy and cultural trends turns the conventional idea of causality completely on its head. For example, it means that investor confidence doesn’t follow the trend in the stock market; instead, stock market trends follow investor confidence. News doesn’t create stock market trends; social mood determines both the character of human events and the trend in stocks.

And, relevant to the latest threat the world is facing, swine flu, epidemics don’t just “happen.” Historically, they occur at specific moments in human history. Here’s is a short excerpt from Robert Prechter’s two-volume set on socionomics, The Wave Principle of Human Social Behavior, Chapter 18 (bold added):

The fact is that epidemics and pandemics seem to hit populations during major negative social mood trends. …When we study pandemics of the Dark Ages or the Spanish influenza epidemic that broke out during the bear market of 1917 (which year also saw intense fighting in World War I and the Communist coup in Russia), there always appears to be a bear market in force, and the extent of the epidemic tends to correlate with the size of the setback in mood.

So, is it a coincidence that the first cases of swine flu in Mexico were reported in early March, when global stock markets (read: global social mood) were hitting lows they hadn’t seen in years or decades?

“It’s encouraging to see the governor of Virginia agreed with the ACLU that the Virginia Fusion Center’s Threat Assessment warranted an investigation,” said Caroline Fredrickson, Director of the ACLU Washington Legislative Office. “We are hopeful that the federal government will follow suit and realize how damaging these fusion center reports can be absent strict guidelines and intense oversight. We’re looking forward to working with Congress and the Obama administration to conduct a thorough audit of these centers before more federal money is spent to support their activities.”

The federal government has facilitated the growth of a network of fusion centers since 9/11 to expand information collection and sharing practices among law enforcement agencies, the private sector and the intelligence community. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), there were 70 fusion centers in the United States as of February 2009.

The ACLU has long warned the government about the dangers posed by fusion centers without proper oversight and, in 2007, released a report entitled, “What’s Wrong With Fusion Centers?” The report, which was updated last year, identifies specific concerns with fusion centers, including their ambiguous lines of authority, the troubling role of private corporations, the participation of the military, the use of data mining and their excessive secrecy.

Earlier this month, the ACLU sent five letters to the DHS Office of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties urging investigations into five troubling incidents, several of which have stemmed from DHS-funded fusion centers. From directing local police to investigate non-violent political activists and religious groups in Texas to advocating surveillance of third-party presidential candidate supporters in Missouri, there have been repeated and persistent disclosures of troubling memos and reports from local fusions centers.

“With any luck, this investigation will shine a light on the murky internal operations of domestic intelligence centers,” said Michael German, ACLU Policy Counsel and former FBI Agent. “This threat assessment isn’t just troubling for its constitutional and racial implications; it also contains wildly misleading information that could lead to unnecessary and wasteful investigations of innocent Americans. It’s important for lawmakers from all levels of government to become engaged with this issue, conduct thorough oversight of fusion centers and enact legislation to protect against unwarranted intelligence activities that threaten our democracy while doing nothing to improve security.”

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Alaska health officials and the Anchorage School District teamed up Wednesday to prepare for a worst case scenario by practicing a mass dispensing of vaccines.

The exercise comes as the World Health Organization raised its pandemic alert, which means it believes a global outbreak of the swine flu is imminent.

No cases of swine flu have been reported in Alaska. Still, health officials say it is possible swine flu will reach our state, and they want to be ready in case it does.

Over the past two weeks, 11 schools have participated in an exercise to distribute the chicken pox vaccine to students.

This is also a chance to practice dispensing medication in the event of a large scale emergency, according to the Department of Health and Social Services and the school district.

Two Anchorage schools on Wednesday had a special delivery from the health department.

The schools received hundreds of doses of the varicella vaccine, which is used to prevent chicken pox.

The state requires all elementary students receive two shots of the vaccine by next year.

“Part of it is getting a jump on that cause,” said Mark Mew, the school district’s director of security and emergency preparedness. “There is obviously going to be a rush at the doctor’s office and the Health Department.”

This is also a chance for the district to practice its ability to deliver a lot of medication on short notice.

“We have a responsibility as the Department of Health and Human services to really have a high level of capacity to be able to deal with public health emergencies should they occur,” DHSS Deputy Director Jayson Smart said.

The school district says it wants to be ready to help out in the event of a pandemic.

“We’ve known for a couple of years that we’ve got a threat of pandemic flu, everybody’s been thinking about avian influenza for the last few years,” Mew said.

This is the third time DHSS and the school district have teamed up for a mass vaccination drill.

The majority of staff who helped with the drill is employed by the district, but some are volunteers.

“And when we do these kinds of exercises or practices, it helps us kind of identify, where do we have problems in things we need to fix to be better at doing that. This is a great practicing opportunity,” Smart said.

The timing of this pandemic practice couldn’t be better now that swine flu is sweeping across the nation.

“It wasn’t the reason we’re doing this necessarily, but certainly timely. It’s got everybody’s mind on that topic right now,” said Mew.

Over the past two weeks, the district distributed nearly 2,000 chicken pox vaccines to students from kindergarten to sixth grade.

The district said its practice is paying off. It can now give more than 100 shots in less than an hour.

Although it has been deadly in the disease epicenter, Mexico, and caused the death of one Mexican infant in the United States, in other countries people infected with swine flu have fared well, with diarrhea the biggest complaint.

The World Health Organization is expected to move quickly to designate a full pandemic — at level 6 of its 6-point scale — within days to reflect the continuing spread of swine flu among people who have not been to Mexico, including in Europe.

Margaret Chan, the WHO’s director-general, on Wednesday night raised the world flu alert level from 4 to 5 and said: “It is really all of humanity that is under threat during a pandemic.”

Echoing other infectious disease experts, and drawing on her experience fighting SARS and bird flu outbreaks as health director of Hong Kong, she said viruses such as the H1N1 swine strain needed to be closely watched in case they worsen.

“We learn from previous pandemics. Pandemic virus is precarious, unpredictable, and will take us by surprise,” she told reporters at the WHO’s headquarters.

PATIENTS RECOVERING WITHOUT DRUGS

But Chan acknowledged that the disease may well cause more discomfort than death, noting that many patients infected in the United States have recovered on their own and without medicine.

“It is possible that the full clinical spectrum of this disease goes from mild illness to severe disease. We need to continue to monitor the evolution of the situation to get the specific information and data we need to answer this,” she said.

“There may be a possibility that the virus will die out and stop, and that would be the best for us. But it can turn the other way.”

Several theories are circulating about why swine flu has killed as many as 176 people in Mexico while having mild and more manageable effects elsewhere.

Some experts speculate that the Mexican victims did not receive appropriate medical care or suffered other health complications that made them vulnerable to the flu.

For the time being, the WHO’s own guidance to people who suspect they have been infected with swine flu is essentially the same as advice for seasonal flu care.

Its website’s “frequently asked questions” about the virus tell people who have a high fever, cough or sore throat to rest and take plenty of fluids, wash hands frequently, and avoid work, school or crowds as much as possible. (www.who.int/csr/disease/swineflu/faq/en/index.html#q11)

MILD OR SEVERE PANDEMIC?

Keiji Fukuda, the WHO’s acting assistant director-general, said that swine flu appeared very similar to normal seasonal flu, a disease that is rarely fatal for healthy adults but can kill the elderly and infirm.

Between 3 and 5 million people experience severe illness due to regular, seasonal flu around the world each year, and between 250,000 and 500,000 die as a result.

Fukuda said it was not yet clear whether swine flu would turn into a mild or severe pandemic, raising the possibility that the virus could have more serious effects as it continues to permeate new communities or as climate conditions change.

There were three pandemic flu outbreaks in the 20th century — in 1918, 1957 and 1968 — known respectively as Spanish, Asian, and Hong Kong influenza. An estimated 50 million people died in the first outbreak, about 2 million in the second and between 1 and 3 million in the third.

“In the 1918 pandemic, the first wave was mild, but by fall, the second wave killed many people. So whichever way this virus swings, we can’t possibly know,” said Guan Yi, a microbiologist at the University of Hong Kong.

“At this point, chances are it will be mild, but we can’t rule out it will turn virulent. And even if it turns milder, it can still kill, depending on the kind of person it infects.”

Health experts fear swine flu could be especially dangerous for the old and infirm, especially those with immune-system suppressing diseases such as HIV/AIDS.

Its spread to poor countries that lack medical staff, drug stockpiles, and diagnostic tests — and where tropical and other diseases are also prevalent — is another serious concern.

Guan Yi said that if it spread to Egypt or Indonesia, where H5N1 bird flu is endemic, it might combine with that virus.

“It could turn into a very powerful H5N1 that is very transmissible among people. Then we will be in trouble, it will be a tragedy.”

Then, the same week that Americans learned that they were “domestic terrorists”—at least according to Obama’s new DHS (Department of Homeland Security),—if they own a bible, a pocket Constitution or guns, and still believe in Life, Liberty and Freedom, – they also learned that Obama’s Census Bureau had hired thousands of new temporary employees, equipped each with a handheld GPS computer and sent them out to mark GPS coordinates for every residential front door in America.

Oddly, it was this same period that news was breaking of an international flu pandemic, suspected of being a weaponized strain of the virus never before seen, – and that Obama’s team still sees no need to close the US-Mexican border, despite the cross continental spread of a deadly illness now claiming American lives.

Now, if any one of these events happened alone, one might not get too excited. But when a string of such events happen all at once, one begins to question the string of freedom and life threatening coincidences…

I can’t resist the urge to question the authority and purpose behind such a BIG BROTHER initiative, when the official Census itself is not due to be taken until 2010…

No imagination is required to think up a whole laundry list of evil that could be done with a nationwide GPS grid of coordinate’s markers painted on every private home across the country. But I was having trouble thinking up one good reason for it, even one legitimate use that would justify what must be a very expensive undertaking.

According to one of the Census workers, who spoke with me on condition of anonymity, they must GPS mark the coordinates “within 40 ft of every front door” in America and they are supposed to complete that mission nation wide, within 90 days, by the end of July 2009.

The workers were not told why they were GPS marking every front door. But a supervisor is sent out to follow them door-to-door, to make certain that no door is left unmarked. Every door will be marked by one employee, and then checked by a follow-up supervisor.

So, I had to ask, why?

Why does the Obama administration need or want the latitude and longitude coordinates for every home in America? Why the rush to GPS paint every home in the next 90 days? Why must the marker be within 40 ft of every front door? For what possible purpose does the Fed need GPS coordinates for every home, and under what authority do they have the right? Census workers, whom I asked, had the same holy-crap look on their faces that I had by then…

ACORN signed on as a national partner with the U.S. Census Bureau in February 2009 to assist with the recruitment of the 1.4 million temporary workers needed to go door-to-door to count every person in the United States — currently believed to be more than 306 million people. But the count doesn’t take place until 2010… This is April 2009.

Obama’s interest in an ACORN controlled 2010 Census, for the purpose of redistricting to the advantage of Democrats before the 2010 mid-term elections, comes as NO shock from a regime known for their heavy handed Rules for Radicals political strategies. But what does this have to do with GPS marking every home in the country?

The 2% of Americans, who have served military duty at some point in life, are very familiar with the most common use of GPS target painting. The other 98% of Americans might want to pick up a book on the subject, such as The Precision Revolution: GPS and the Future of Aerial Warfare …

Their Authority?

RightSoup.com has just about the only online report available on the matter, and they report, “Why does the government (and ACORN) need to have the GPS coordinates of your FRONT DOOR? Your house is probably on Google Maps already. But the front door? Sounds like a jackboot convenience to me. This is a developing story, and several reports of those who have already been visited by the GPS squad can be found in this forum thread.”

If you challenge Census Bureau employees about the GPS marking of your private residence, you will be handed a preprinted explanation referring you to Sec. 223, Title 13, U.S. Code, Chapter 7, Subtitle 2, which explains the penalties for refusing to provide names and statistics of occupants when asked for by a census taker. This only applies when they are taking a census, (which will not be taken until next year), and the penalty for refusing to answer questions for a census is up to a $500 fine.

However, since the actual Census is not due to be taken until 2010, nobody is asking for any information today. They are only GPS marking your front door today, and Sec. 223, Title 13, U.S. Code, Chapter 7, Subtitle 2 provides the Fed NO authority to GPS paint your front door.

Best I can tell, the Fed has NO authority whatsoever, to paint the front door of every private residence in America. Still, that is exactly what they are doing. Now, the trillion dollar question is, why?

A State of Emergency

In short, the statute generally prohibits federal military personnel and units of the National Guard operating under federal authority, from acting in a law enforcement capacity within the United States.

As members of the military are sworn to protect and defend the Constitution and the American people against all enemies, both foreign and domestic, a federal order to do the exact opposite, and take aim at American citizens, would be a clear violation of the US Constitution and the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878, unless…

US Military personnel are trained to follow orders. But they are also obligated to refuse any order deemed “unlawful.” In order to make such an order appear “lawful,” the federal government would first have to declare a national “state of emergency,” such as in the case of an international pandemic, which can be demonstrated to threaten the health and well-being of American citizens.

Following a state of emergency declaration, a federal order for Martial Law would be expected, to allegedly provide law enforcement and security for citizens. This type of scenario can be followed by a presidential order to quarantine, disarm and contain American citizens in the name of national security, all of it, having the appearance of being “lawful.”

Is this what is happening?

Connecting the Dots

Alone, individual events look concerning, but not conspiratorial. What about when you place the pieces of the puzzle together and take a look at the entire picture developing?

Under this “theory,” how does the GPS marking of every private residence in the nation fit into the picture?

I wish I knew… but I don’t!

What I do know is this… Coincidences of this number and magnitude don’t happen. They certainly do not happen all at the same time, within hours or days of each other, out of the wild blue tin-foil hat heaven…

I also know that people had better start asking the right people the right questions and demanding answers fast. Begin with asking the mainstream press why there has been no public notification of the federal governments GPS marking your front door?

Then, I suggest contacting your local Census Bureau office immediately, and demanding an explanation as well as advice as to what law gives them the right to GPS paint every front door in America?

I’d also recommend sending a copy of this column to your state and federal representative, demanding that they put a stop to it or explain why it’s necessary, and what law gives them the right?

Unfortunately, we live in a moment of history when real events are much stranger than nutty conspiracy theories. The people have every right to know what is happening. But unless you demand to know, nobody’s talking!

In fact, the current outbreak of the H1N1 virus, which emerged in San Diego and southern Mexico late last month, may not even do as much damage as the run-of-the-mill flu outbreaks that occur each winter without much fanfare.

“Let’s not lose track of the fact that the normal seasonal influenza is a huge public health problem that kills tens of thousands of people in the U.S. alone and hundreds of thousands around the world,” said Dr. Christopher Olsen, a molecular virologist who studies swine flu at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine in Madison.

His remarks Wednesday came the same day Texas authorities announced that a nearly 2-year-old boy with the virus had died in a Houston hospital Monday.

“Any time someone dies, it’s heartbreaking for their families and friends,” Olsen said. “But we do need to keep this in perspective.”

Flu viruses are known to be notoriously unpredictable, and this strain could mutate at any point — becoming either more benign or dangerously severe. But mounting preliminary evidence from genetics labs, epidemiology models and simple mathematics suggests that the worst-case scenarios are likely to be avoided in the current outbreak.

“This virus doesn’t have anywhere near the capacity to kill like the 1918 virus,” which claimed an estimated 50 million victims worldwide, said Richard Webby, a leading influenza virologist at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

When the current virus was first identified, the similarities between it and the 1918 flu seemed ominous.

Both arose in the spring at the tail end of the flu season. Both seemed to strike people who were young and healthy instead of the elderly and infants. Both were H1N1 strains, so called because they had the same types of two key proteins that are largely responsible for a virus’ ability to infect and spread.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health published genetic sequence data Monday morning of flu samples isolated from patients in California and Texas, and thousands of scientists immediately began downloading the information. Comparisons to known killers — such as the 1918 strain and the highly lethal H5N1 avian virus — have since provided welcome news.

“There are certain characteristics, molecular signatures, which this virus lacks,” said Peter Palese, a microbiologist and influenza expert at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York. In particular, the swine flu lacks an amino acid that appears to increase the number of virus particles in the lungs and make the disease more deadly.

Scientists have identified several other differences between the current virus and its 1918 predecessor, but the significance of those differences is still unclear, said Dr. Scott Layne, an epidemiologist at the UCLA School of Public Health.

Ralph Tripp, an influenza expert at the University of Georgia, said that his early analysis of the virus’ protein-making instructions suggested that people exposed to the 1957 flu pandemic — which killed up to 2 million people worldwide — may have some immunity to the new strain.

That could explain why older people have been spared in Mexico, where the swine flu has been most deadly.

The swine virus does appear able to spread easily among humans, which persuaded the WHO to boost its influenza pandemic alert level to phase 5, indicating that a worldwide outbreak of infection is very likely. And the CDC reported on its website that “a pattern of more severe illness associated with the virus may be emerging in the United States.”

“We expect to see more cases, more hospitalizations, and, unfortunately, we are likely to see more deaths from the outbreak,” Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told reporters Wednesday on her first day at work.

But certainly nothing that would dwarf a typical flu season. In the U.S., between 5% and 20% of the population becomes ill and 36,000 people die — a mortality rate of between 0.24% and 0.96%.

Dirk Brockmann, a professor of engineering and applied mathematics at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., used a computer model of human travel patterns to predict how this swine flu virus would spread in the worst-case scenario, in which nothing is done to contain the disease.

After four weeks, almost 1,700 people in the U.S. would have symptoms, including 198 in Los Angeles, according to his model. That’s just a fraction of the county’s thousands of yearly flu victims.

Just because the virus is being identified in a growing number of places — including Austria, Canada, Germany, Israel, New Zealand, Spain and Britain — doesn’t mean it’s spreading particularly quickly, Olsen said.”

You don’t ever find anything that you don’t look for,” he said. “Now that diagnostic laboratories and physicians and other healthcare workers know to look for it, perhaps it’s not surprising that you’re going to see additional cases identified.”

And a pandemic doesn’t necessarily have a high fatality rate. Even in Mexico, the fatalities may simply reflect that hundreds of thousands of people have been infected. Since the symptoms of swine flu are identical to those of a normal flu, there’s no way to know how many cases have evaded government health officials, St. Jude’s Webby said.

As the virus adapts to its human hosts, it is likely to find ways of spreading more efficiently. But evolution also suggests it might become less dangerous, Olsen said.

“If it kills off all its potential hosts, you reach a point where the virus can’t survive,” he said. Working to calm public fears, U.S. officials on Wednesday repeatedly stressed the statistic of yearly flu deaths — 36,000.

Sebelius and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano also rejected calls to close the borders, which several lawmakers reiterated Wednesday on Capitol Hill.

“We are making all of our decisions based on the science and the epidemiology,” Napolitano said. “The CDC, the public health community and the World Health Organization all have said that closing out nation’s borders is not merited here.”

Though scientists have begun to relax about the initial toll, they’re considerably less comfortable when taking into account the fall flu season. They remain haunted by the experience of 1918, when the relatively mild first wave of flu was followed several months later by a more aggressive wave.

The longer the virus survives, the more chances it has to mutate into a deadlier form.

“If this virus keep going through our summer,” Palese said, “I would be very concerned.”
